Rand Desk reports South African business, markets, politics and personal finance. Every story starts from a primary source: the Reserve Bank, Stats SA, National Treasury, Parliament, the regulators, and the companies themselves. We link those sources at the end of every story so you can check our work.

Each story also says what the news means for households, savers, borrowers, workers and firms in South Africa. When a source publishes its numbers as a series, we chart them.

How we work

We use AI tools to find, research and draft stories, and say so on every story. No story goes up until it passes our checks. Every number has to trace to a source, nothing may be copied, and the writing has to meet our house style. Stories about politics, courts, crime, health or named private individuals wait for the editor before they are published. The rest go up once they pass the checks, and the standards review re-checks them twice a day. When we get something wrong, the correction is shown on the story. How we work has the full process.

Ownership and funding

Rand Desk is independently owned by Tyron Morgan, the editor. It is funded by advertising and sponsorship, which are always labelled; advertisers have no say over what we cover. Our Conflicts of interest page lists the editor’s business interests and how we keep them out of our coverage.
