This notice explains how Rand Desk handles personal information under the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).

Who is responsible

Rand Desk is published by Tyron Morgan, its owner and editor. The publisher is the responsible party and information officer under POPIA. Contact: newsroom@randdesk.co.za.

Reading the site

Our host, Cloudflare, processes your IP address and browser details to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse, which is our legitimate interest in running a secure site. Cloudflare’s network includes servers outside South Africa, including in the United States; it processes this data for us under a data processing agreement that requires protection comparable to POPIA.

We do not use a visitor analytics service at present.

Stories you save are kept in your own browser on your device. We never see the list.

Fonts and images are served from our own site.

The newsletters

What we keep: your email address, your first name if you give it (to greet you), the subjects you chose, and a record of your sign-up and confirmation (date, time and IP address), so that we can send what you asked for and show that you consented.

Consent: you subscribe by ticking the consent box and confirming by email. Subscribing is voluntary; if you do not tick the box, we will not email you.

Where it is kept: our email provider, Mailrelay (Spain), stores this information for us outside South Africa under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, which gives protection comparable to POPIA.

How long we keep it: while you are subscribed. When you unsubscribe we delete your address within 30 days, but keep the record of your consent and unsubscription for three years to show we had your permission.

What we send: only the editions you chose. They contain news and may include advertising or sponsor messages. “Offers from partners” is a separate choice, sent by us; we never give your address to anyone.

Leaving: every email has an unsubscribe link, free of charge. You can also change your editions or write to newsroom@randdesk.co.za.

Advertising cookies

When advertising is switched on, third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Google’s advertising cookies let it and its partners serve ads based on those visits. Google, in the United States, decides how its advertising cookies are used and is responsible for that processing. You can opt out of personalised advertising in Google’s Ads Settings, and read how Google uses information from sites that use its services. We ask for your consent before any advertising or analytics cookie is set, and you can change your choice at any time from “Cookie settings” at the foot of every page.

Emails you send us

We use what you send only to reply, and keep it only as long as needed.

Your rights

You may ask to see the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, and object to its use. Write to newsroom@randdesk.co.za. We do not sell personal information.

You may complain to the Information Regulator: inforegulator.org.za, enquiries@inforegulator.org.za, 010 023 5200 or toll-free 0800 017 160, Woodmead North Office Park, 54 Maxwell Drive, Woodmead, Johannesburg, 2191.

Changes

We will update this notice when our practices change, and the date at the top will change with it.
