The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) had captured 12,601 of the 14,245 result slips expected in KwaZulu-Natal by midday on Friday, or 88%, according to the provincial update.

Provincial Electoral Officer Ntombifuthi Masinga said 11,694 slips had also been independently audited, which is 82% of those expected. The slips come from 5,028 voting stations across the province.

The IEC said capturing was still affected by power failures, slow connectivity, staff fatigue and recounts in several municipalities. Progress ranged from 40% to 70% across the municipalities it listed.

In eThekwini, the commission said high volumes and recounts had slowed the work, and 64% of results were captured. Msunduzi was at 40%, held up by recounts of result slips. Msinga reached 70% despite storm-related power failures.

Abaqulusi stood at 63% and Ulundi at 64%, where staff fatigue and slow connectivity were reported. Alfred Duma was at 49% for the same reasons, and Inkosi Mtubatuba at 67%, with power failures affecting its connection.

A storm-related power failure in Ndwedwe on Thursday, between 15:30 and 16:30, disrupted operations there. The IEC moved capturing to the KwaDukuza Library, which is now used as the KwaDukuza capturing site. Ndwedwe was at 59%.

The province has gained 51 percentage points since the previous count. At 17:00 on Thursday the IEC had put KwaZulu-Natal at 37% captured, the fourth-lowest of the nine provinces, in its briefing reported in our earlier story.

The commission also reminded parties, independent candidates and the public that objections under Section 65 of the Electoral Act close at 17:00 SAST on Friday. Masinga said an objector can use the section when they believe an irregularity at a voting station may have undermined the credibility of the vote.

The commission said it will weigh each objection it receives and issue a determination.

Objections must be sent by email to S65objections@elections.org.za before the deadline.

Nationally, the commission’s chairperson, Mosotho Moepya, said at the National Results Operations Centre in Midrand on Thursday that more than 60% of the 66,073 expected results had been captured at 17:00. Of those slips, about 40,202 had been scanned and 32,238 independently audited, and 65 of the 213 municipalities had finished the capturing, scanning, auditing and exceptions process.

The KwaZulu-Natal figures are the commission’s own count at 12:00 on Friday. Counting continues across the province, and Moepya said on Thursday that he expected collation to finish by the weekend.
